As your new fire chief I began work immediately after first setting foot on island December 11, 2022. I am proud to be chosen as Chief Rob's successor and honored to follow through with his vision. There is an abundant amount of work to be done to follow the path of recovery from Hurricane Ian. Priority one is to work with FEMA, state and local government as our resilient community heals and creates a stronger future. As we continue to pursue, "a sustainable FIRE & EMS response agency for everyone that lives, works and visits Useppa," we must focus on readiness by hardening our fire station, assuring equipment is maintained and appropriate staffing with only the best.
Here is a brief list of items I have been reviewing and/or addressing:
FEMA documentation and recovery efforts for Fire Rescue
Inventoried station/apparatus and equipment to evaluate readiness
Reviewed Standard Operating Procedures/Guidelines
Joined Lee County Fire Chiefs Group to maintain relationships
Working with Lee County Medical Director to upgrade level of service
Hired 4 additional firefighters - 2 are paramedics and one is a nurse
Scheduled meetings with local government officials
Working to put Useppa Island on the Lee County BOCC map
Thank you to all who have welcomed Tamara & I to this wonderful community!
Respectfully,
William (Bill) Schobel
